Strangers on a train
atricia’s Highsmith’s 1950 novel “Strangers on a Train.” A well-known movie derived from the book and directed by Alfred Hitchcock was released in 1951.
In the book, the two principal characters meet on a train crossing the United States. Guy Haines, a young architect, was traveling to meet his estranged wife, Miriam, in Texas, hopefully to settle on divorce terms. He meets Charles Anthony Bruno, headed to Santa Fe on vacation, on the train. After some desultory conversation, Bruno proposes, rather casually, that the two of them could do each other a favor by exchanging murders. Bruno would kill Miriam, and Guy would kill Bruno’s father, whom Bruno claims is depriving him of sufficient money. Neither would be suspects because of their lack of connection with the proposed decedent.
Guy does not take the proposal seriously, but later, after Guy has an unsuccessful meeting with Miriam, and tells Bruno about it, Bruno murders Miriam in Texas. This takes place at a time time when Guy is in Mexico. No one initially suspects Guy.
